We all know (or should) by now the imperatives of “reduce, reuse, recycle” philosophy. However, when it comes to gadgets and electronics, being environment-friendly and responsible is not quite an easy task. Most manufacturers do not have the necessary infrastructure and mindset for a more responsible production and waste management systems. Consumers and users too do not have the necessary means and support to live up to the ideals of green living.

Despite advanced waste management and environment friendly laws in a number of countries, international standards on these aspects have not yet been institutionalized. Thus, even government institutions are having difficulty implementing laws and policing compliance by those concerned.

Trailblazing Green Electronics

However in the past few years, the move towards greener business practices, driven by either government legislations, consumer awareness and demand, or paradigm shifts in corporate outlook, are slowly taking place. A number of notable and maverick moves by electronic companies towards greener production and green products are also noticeable.

Renewable Energy

Among them are green gadgets that usually come with energy-saving features. The latest on the list is the Samsung Blue Earth. As its name suggest, it is a product that cares for the earth. Not only that, it is the first green (although the color is blue) phone to be powered by a renewable energy source. It has solar panels at the back that allow you to run your mobile phone on energy derived from the sun. Charging is non-stop as long as the sun is up there. Now, that is awesome.

Its pro-environment feature goes skin-deep as it is made of PCM, a kind of plastic that is derived from recycled plastic bottles. It also comes with a wall charger that requires minimal power while on standby. The packaging material is also made of recycled matter and is recyclable itself. Printing uses the bio-derived soy bean based ink.

An interesting “Eco Walk” function is an added touch. It allows users to count their steps and automatically calculate the amount of carbon dioxide reduced when walking as opposed to using a petrol-powered vehicle. It is a fun feature that also encourages users to be wary of and constantly monitor their carbon footprints.

Green Techie’s choice

Besides being a certified tree-hugger, it also is a sophisticated device and is the first “green” touch screen phone.  The 3 inch touch screen makes up most of the face of the mobile phone. Below it are three convenient keys namely: the confirm key, the cancel key and the home key.  The touch screen is responsive and sports a nice look. When touched, it vibrates and emits a sound, a beep to be specific. This gives users a confirmation for the user that they are pressing hard (actually soft) enough to elicit a response.

A quad-band phone, the Samsung Blue Earth uses the EDGE/GPRS network. With the usual trappings expected of the mobile phones of today like a 3.2 mega pixel camera, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity, music and video players and FM radio and a microSDHC slot.

So, if you are an environment lover yet a techie that demands functionality in mobile devices, the Blue Earth for sure will appeal to you as an attractive choice.
