3 Simple Steps For Green Living

It seems everywhere you look these days people are encouraged to go green. So what does ‘going green’ really mean? It all boils down to everyone doing their part to protect the environment and cut down on green house gases. So how does that affect the everyday person? It affects all of us in many ways, if we work together to reduce our impact on the planet we will leave a better place for our children and grandchildren to live. The rate we have been going we are well on our way to ruining the earth with pollution and waste – it is time to reclaim our planet and do our best to save it!

So what can the average person do to help save the environment by ‘going green’? It really isn’t hard at all, just taking a few simple steps and making a conscious effort can go a long way to helping our earth to heal and renew. Here is a list of some of the simplest things you can do.

Recycle. Okay, that seems like an obvious answer but how many of us really make an effort to reduce our waste by recycling? If you are fortunate enough to live in an area that provides curbside recycling then have the work is already done for you. Just sort your garbage and haul the cans to the curb. The recycling company will take care of it from there. For the rest of us, recycling takes a little more effort. One of the simplest ways to recycle if you don’t have a curbside plan is to place bins in your garage or on your patio to sort the garbage into, one for aluminum, one for newspaper, one for glass, etc. Then find out where the nearest recycling center is to you and haul the bins in once a month, more often if you need to. Many communities have large dumpsters that are centrally located for newspapers and some even have them for other materials that can be recycled.
Use energy efficient bulbs. This is an area where people could not only save the environment, but save big money on their electric bill as well. The little swirly compact fluorescent bulbs last longer and cost less to run than standard light bulbs. However, many people still don’t use them because the initial cost is greater. Yes, they do cost more to buy than a standard bulb, but they last 10 times longer and are four times more energy efficient than standard bulbs. So they actually cost you much less than a regular light bulb. Plus, regular incandescent make up 25% of your electric bill, just imagine how much you would save by switching to CFL bulbs!
Use alternative transportation. We are attached to our cars. They give us freedom to come and go as we please. But, they are also a major source of pollution. Look for ways that you can cut back on how much you drive. Ride a bike, take public transportation, carpool, or consolidate trips. These are all good ways to cut back on how much you drive. Plus when you drive your car less, it will last longer saving you money on car repairs and maintenance.

There are many more ways to go green, but these are simple steps that anyone can do. If everyone makes even a little effort, we can reduce the stress on the earth and leave it a better place for those who follow us.
